IIM Bill 2015: Outlook poll Email to all US alumni

As a follow up to the IIM Bill 2015, please find a message from the IIMA Alumni Office. Our apologies, in case you have already received this message from the Alumni office regarding the Outlook India poll.

--------

At least 4 of the IIMs have formally written to the Ministry / Minister expressing their serious or deep reservations about the current form of the draft IIM bill that was put up in June 2015.

We are waiting to talk formally to the ministry.

Meanwhile, the media appears to have picked up the issue. There is a poll being conducted by Outlook magazine which is available at http://www.outlookindia.com/surveyvote.aspx?survey=89

This poll will help gauge public opinion on the Bill.

Do spare some time and take a look.

It is important for citizens of India to know that quality in higher education comes from autonomy with accountability and micromanagement does not constitute autonomy. Our Director and Chairman have been quite candid on this score.

Thank you.

Thank you,

As of now, there is no IIM bill. IIMs are societies and registered as societies. THey are not universities and cannot grant degrees. That is why even IIMA and IIMB just grant post graduate diploma certificates and not degrees.

With the IIM bill, they will be able to grant degree. Shameful that IIMs just grant certificates of diplomas and they talk of equivalence to Ivy-league schools

UNLIKELY it will be passed in the foreseeable future OR ever in the future, if I daresay

    Reasons being:

IIM bill (http://www.prsindia.org/uploads/...) is still in “draft” stage and not yet approved by Cabinet. Cabinet approval is required before presenting in Lok Sabha
Even if it goes to Lok Sabha, with the kind of disruptions that are happening, chances of it getting passed are remote. IIM bill will have the lowest priority among the bills that the government intends to pass. Even bills like disabilities bill was pending for almost 3 years!!
Continuous differences of opinion between MHRD and PMO on the IIM bill. example: PMO directed HRD to re-draft bill (PMO directs HRD to redraft IIM Bill), After changes, IIM bill heads to Cabinet - Times of India, IIM bill finally makes its way to Cabinet - Times of India….etc)
It has not been presented several times in the past despite coming up for discussion example Did not happen in monsoon session of 2016 (IIM Bill to be introduced in Monsoon Session of Parliament | Shiksha), did not happen in winter session of 2015 (IIM bill finally makes its way to Cabinet - Times of India), did not happen in winter session of 2016 (Govt to introduce IIM Bill in Winter Session | Millennium Post, Winter Session: 9 New Bills Including Surrogacy Regulation In Line)….
Private PGDM B-schools have ganged up against IIM bill. example (‘IIM Bill should not affect the operations of PGDM schools’ Private B-schools at a disadvantage? IIM Bill: Other B-schools see red…etc)
IIMs A, B are very influential and have been against IIM bill introduction. They want autonomy to the extent that no one other than them have their own say.

So the IIM students are likely to suffer with diplomas vs. degrees for a long time
